When Should You Hire A Consultant?

Consider that hiring a consultant to help you is not really any different than the decision your client makes when he or she chooses you. After all, your client could learn to program Microsoft Access or Design a network but is that smart? When you are talking to this client you'll probably describe two options .
Option one for you client is to do the work internally and invest the time required to build a mediocre result. Clients can learn (or get someone trained) to understand Microsoft Access and learn the details as they go. The tool will probably be workable but the client may have to adapt his or her business to fit the software.
Option two for your client is to hire you. The trade off is that the application will work better, be up sooner and adapt to the business, not vice versa. Most importantly, the client will save his or her time, worth more than the dollars spent with you .

If that makes sense for the client's business, why not for yours? Faced with the option of hiring an accountant to do taxes, many consultants spend 10 or more hours each quarter doing the math required to avoid paying penalties to the IRS. But what are those 10 hours worth? In the same way, they struggle to write their own sales material when they could either hire a specialist or invest in resources that can make the process much faster and better. Remember that what you are willing to recommend to the client should be exactly what you are willing to do yourseft.
